I couldn’t believe I agreed to this. I was in a gargoyle’s embrace as he flew me over Montreal. I’d spent most of the flight terrified and clutching his body, but dared to peek below and was stunned. The lights, the buildings, the water all looked so magical from this perspective.

“The city—” I paused, awe capturing my voice. “It’s magnificent.” I lifted my head to see more.

“Yes, it is,” Hugo agreed. “Flying over the city at night is one of my favorite things.”

As he pointed out more landmarks, I clung to him, but some of the tension had left my rigid body.

“You can barely even hear the traffic up here,” I marveled. The sounds of the city below were muted.

“When I’m up here, all my troubles don’t seem as important.”

I considered that. “I can see why.”

“Not so scary?” he asked.

“Oh, it’s terrifying.” I chuckled. “As long as you don’t let me go.”

“Never,” he promised. “I’m turning to fly over the city now so we can head to the Plateau.”

“Okay.” I gripped him more tightly.

We flew over a residential area, and Hugo pointed to a building ahead. “That’s where we’re headed.”

I followed where he pointed. “That gothic looking building with gray stone?” I let out a small laugh. “It has to be. It has gargoyles perched on the sides.”

He chuckled. “That’s the one. The Vault.” As we approached it, he said, “We’re going to descend. Don’t be alarmed.”

“I’ll try not to.” Still, I tightened in his arms.

He positioned us upright as we lowered to a rooftop. Several seating areas, potted plants, and a hot tub spread across the surface. Once his feet touched the ground, I followed, but stumbled. Hugo held my upper arms to keep me steady.

My hair had been tousled by the wind, and I attempted to tame it. “Wow, that was—incredible.”

Hugo beamed at me. “You were so brave.”

This entire experience was surreal. I chewed my bottom lip, remembering the reason I was here. “Do you think he’ll be able to get to me, Hugo?”

Hugo’s expression hardened. “He’s locked up far from here, under guard by many Sentries.” Then he fixed a determined gaze on me. “But I promise, I’ll never let him touch you.”
